3.9 out of 5 stars 86 ratings

Seduction and sex can be pretty funny—especially when both sides play dirty!

What would you do if the gynecologist subbing for your regular doctor turned out to be your old high school crush? Psychologist Dr. Jennifer Monroe does what any normal, well-adjusted woman would do. She makes an excuse, sends the doctor and the nurse from the room, dives into her clothes, and flees—hoping she'll never run into him again.

Unfortunately, her running away makes conscientious Dr. Matt Penrose conclude she has a problem with being examined by a male doctor. He wants to refer her to another doctor for her exam, but she refuses to take his calls. Dallas is a big city. What are the odds these two will ever meet again? Even money, when Fate lends a hand.

When they meet again at a charity gala, he urges her to seek professional help. She's incensed at his presumption—and furious that he doesn't remember her. All of her old high school resentment and hurt floods back, fueling her desire to teach him a lesson he won't forget.

When Matt belatedly recognizes her as the girl he knew in high school and also figures out the game she’s playing, he decides to turn the tables on her.

Packed with heat and humor, these two play seduction games, but they’re playing for keeps with each determined to get the better of the other.
Payback is the name of the game, and this payback is smoking hot and funny!

And in Joan Reeves' JUST ONE LOOK, it's funny as hell, too.

We all have a memory of that special someone in high school, the one who turned us into knots and ultimately broke our hearts. For psychologist Jennifer Monroe, that memory comes in the drop-dead-gorgeous package of gynecologist Dr. Matt Penrose. But her unexpected encounter with the good doctor, 15 years after they broke up, is the stuff nightmares are made of. There's a last minute doctor substitution at the office where Jennifer goes for her yearly exam, and unbeknownst to her, she lands on Dr. Penrose's examination table. Jennifer panics--as any self-respecting woman would--and from there it's a comedic slide into a battle of wills with the outcome anyone's guess.

I loved this book! If you haven't read JUST ONE LOOK, you're missing out on a great story. It's humorous, sexy to the max, and just plain entertaining. I read it on a blah afternoon, and it was an instant day brightener. I'm now going to look up Joan Reeves' backlist. If this is an example of the type of story she tells, I want to get every one of them!

Though it has what might seem a somewhat cliché premise, Just One Look by Joan Reeves was a surprisingly fun and flirty romantic comedy that was hard to put down. The story starts off with prim Jennifer waiting in her gynecologist's office. A short backstory about a jilting in high school and a broken heart leads to the unsurprising entrance of said love, Dr. Matt Penrose. From there a web of deception, romance and hijinks bring these two together.

    Cover Art: 2 Stars
I really hate to be so harsh on the cover, but there are several reasons behind this. First, I feel that the art is more reminiscent of erotica than a fluffy romantic comedy with sexual encounters. Also, I just think that it is a very boring cover. The lettering is way too stylized, and the blurb is entirely too prominent. I feel the book would have been better serviced with something portraying the comedy in the book as well as the romantic setting.

    Characters: 3.5 Stars
Jennifer and Matt are both character that the reader can easily get behind. Both have their own individual qualities that make them appealing. I think my only problem was that there really wasn't a lot of effort spent on character development. I liked both of the characters, but in the end, I'm not so certain I really knew them, which was a shame since both were really fun to read.

    Plot: 4 Stars
I was really surprised to find this book was not as corny as it first appeared. There is a certain pattern in romance books generally expected, but it's the way the author takes the reader from point A to point B that really matters. I loved that this book evolved along the way. At first, it seemed like it would be more along the wham bam thank you ma'am lines. Instead, I was treated to this great sexual buildup that lead to an explosive end. I loved that, and unlike the trend I've been seeing lately in contemporary romances, the author actually spent some time on the buildup. This is a common complaint I have with a number of books. The "deed" is done within the first few chapters, and I'm left wondering why I should keep reading.

The only major issue I have with the plot is the believability of the back story. Yes, it makes sense that she would be upset, but it seems so strange that Jennifer would still be carrying that sort of baggage. Given all the anger she feels, it seems like she should have suffered something much worse than she did. In the end, she moved so she really didn't even have to deal with the aftermath. It just seemed like too long a time to nurse a broken heart.

    Writing: 4.5 Stars

This book is well written. It's not often that I read without finding issues, but I was only able to spot two actual errors. The story has nice movement, and the progression worked well. There were a few times when the wording didn't flow as well as the rest of the book but was able to overlook since the issues were minor.

    Overall: 4 Stars
Although the story followed the formulaic style of many other contemporary romances, there was enough flare for it to stand out. I liked it so much I was willing sacrifice sleep for it, and from a mom that's about as much a compliment as you can get. There were some issues with character development, and I really didn't like the cover but the story was fun. And sometimes fun is exactly what we need.

    Happy reading!

I'm pretty on the fence about this one, I'm leaning more towards 2.5 stars rather than 3. The premise was interesting even if not the most promising story idea, a bit awkward to run away from your OBGYN, but the problem was even that for a shorter story it still felt like it dragged on. Definitely one of those scenarios where everything could have been fixed with one or two lines from the main character, honesty seems to be a very difficult thing in romance land. That doesn't speak too highly of romance and relationships. For the price not a bad book, but not really my cup of tea.

This was a wonderful story; saucy heroine, confident hero; Sweet love, viscious revenge, happy ending. (I'm always disappointed with an unhapppy ending.) Despite a long work day ahead of me, I ended up not sleeping all night for addictin to this story.

Joan Reeves does a wonderful job of writing saucy heroines & quick tempered, but eventually brought around heroes. She writes about every day people with every day insecurities & every day problems; leaving the more "amourous" portions of the stories just suggestive enough as not to be offensive to more "sensitive" tastes. She keeps the readers always wanting to say, "Just shut up and kiss already!".

I'm disappointed that virtually all of her works are only available in e-books, thus leaving less electronically savvy readers or readers who depend on their local libraries for entertainment missing a good dozen or more wonderful reading opportunities. Having gone to her web site & seen her book list, I find that not even Amazon has captured the whole of her library...leaving me, the admirer, greedily wishing I could get my hands on her entire collection.

This is probably the first product review I've ever written. Does this give you an idea of how much I enjoyed this book? Here's a link to another of her wonderful stories. JANE I'm-Still-Single JONES My preferred delivery of books is audio, but I have happily taken the time to read as much of Joan Reeve's work from my Kindle applications for Smartphone & PC (available through Amazon). I love how the bookmarks sync between each other, enabling me to switch from phone to PC & back with a simple bookmark.

I hope you'll enjoy these books as much as I have.
